Preparing product information for an online shop in Carlow

Allens – The Home and Gift Stores

Before an online shop can present your products clearly, the product information needs to be ready. For a Carlow retailer moving online or rebuilding a shop, that means bringing together names, prices, photographs and specifications in a consistent format. Start with a representative sample so you can agree the structure before preparing the full catalogue.

Create a clear record for each product

Choose one working file or system for approved product information. If you already have a catalogue, export a sample and ask your web designer which information can be reused and which gaps need attention.

Prepare these details for each item:

  • An identifiable product name, brand and product code or SKU.
  • The approved selling price and any planned sale dates.
  • A concise description explaining what the customer receives.
  • Relevant specifications, such as material, dimensions, capacity or pack quantity.

Keep supplier descriptions as source material to check, rather than assuming they answer every customer question. Verify measurements and included items with the person who knows the range. Mark missing information for review instead of filling gaps with guesses.

Separate categories from product details

Categories help customers browse the range; product details help them compare items within it. Plan the main departments and subcategories first, then agree which characteristics belong on the product page and which might also be useful as filters.

Use consistent labels and units. If one item says “500 ml” and another uses a different format for the same capacity, tidy that before the catalogue is loaded. Avoid creating slightly different category or brand names for the same thing.

Identify products with selectable options

Flag items available in different sizes, colours or other options. List the combinations you actually sell, together with the relevant code, price, image and availability for each. Do not assume every size exists in every colour.

Ask your designer to demonstrate a sample product with options before preparing the whole range. Check what the customer selects and which details change with that selection. This makes the required information clearer for the staff supplying it.

Match photographs to the correct items

Keep the original image files and link each image to its product code. Identify the main photograph and any supporting views. Check that the picture shows the item, colour and quantity described on the page.

Agree who supplies or approves the images and confirm they are available for your use. If a supplier provides several versions, choose the appropriate files before upload. Keep a record of missing photographs so they can be resolved before the product goes live.

A Carlow retail example: Allens

The Allens online shop, from the retailer with a store in Carlow.

Allens is an Istech ecommerce client with a store at 19–21 Castle Street, Carlow. Its public online shop covers a varied range, including cooking and dining products, bedding, furniture and gifts.

The website offers browsing by department and brand. A customer looking through cookware needs different product information from someone comparing bedding or furniture, so a single description template needs room for the details that matter to each range.

For your own catalogue, use that distinction when planning the content. Keep shared information consistent, but prepare category-specific details: capacity and pack contents may matter for one range, while dimensions and materials matter for another. The aim is to help customers understand the product they are considering.

Agree stock and delivery information

Decide who maintains online availability and what information customers should see for unavailable or order-in items. If you sell the same range in a physical shop, agree how changes will reach the website: manual updates, an import or a connection to an existing stock system.

Identify products that need different delivery arrangements, such as bulky items or collection-only goods. Supply the weights, packed dimensions or other information your provider needs to configure the agreed method. Confirm any stock-system connection separately in the project scope rather than assuming it is part of a standard shop build.

Review a sample before loading the catalogue

Choose a sample that represents the different kinds of product you sell, including an item with options if relevant. Review it in the proposed shop layout and check:

  • The name, code, price and description identify the correct item.
  • Categories, brands and any agreed filters use consistent terms.
  • Photographs and selectable options match the item being offered.
  • Availability and delivery information are clear on desktop and mobile.

WooCommerce includes tools for importing and exporting product data as CSV files. Agree the required format with your provider and test a small sample before a full import. Review the resulting product pages as well as the import report.

Assign responsibility for future changes

Name the person who approves product information and the person who keeps prices, availability and photographs current. Agree training for the editing tasks your team will handle and identify any ongoing catalogue service you want someone else to provide.

Our technical maintenance is billed yearly. Product additions, content changes and ongoing SEO work are quoted separately; hosting and any integration or software charges should also be clear in the quotation.

Send us a sample of your product information and an outline of the range you want to sell. See our ecommerce website service for Carlow businesses or contact Istech to plan your online catalogue.
